In line with the Week of Integrity’s 2024 theme, Integrity in Sustainability, KPMG Netherlands conducted a comprehensive survey exploring the gap between sustainability ambitions and the daily reality within organizations.

A significant majority (67%) of employees believe it is important for their organization to actively contribute to sustainability. However, the survey reveals critical gaps, including a lack of clear communication, insufficient support for sustainable behavior, and actions that fail to align with sustainability goals.

Key Findings:

  • Lack of Knowledge: While 66% of respondents state their organizations have sustainability goals, many are unaware of the steps being taken to achieve them. This lack of clarity often results in unsustainable behavior.

  • Support for Sustainable Behavior: Only 47% of employees feel supported to act sustainably, and just 1 in 10 say there are consequences for unsustainable actions.

  • Empty Words: Employees criticize leaders for not exemplifying sustainable practices, undermining the credibility of organizational goals.

Angela Ruepert from KPMG Netherlands emphasizes: "This research shows how crucial it is to back up words with actions, not just externally but also within the organization. Engaging employees in sustainability strengthens intrinsic motivation. In short: do what you say!"
